Im Anschluß berichtet uns Gebro Aydin, Mitgründer und Vorstandsmitglied des Mesopotamienvereins Augsburg, über die Arbeit dieses Vereins, die Motivation zu seiner Gründung und die Lage der christlichen Minderheit in der Türkei und den Nachbarstaaten.
„Mitte der 70er Jahre war die Anzahl der in Augsburg ansässigen Assyrer derart angestiegen, dass man die Notwendigkeit sah, sowohl ein kulturelles Zentrum als auch eine Begegnungsstätte zu gründen. Somit entstand aus dieser Idee heraus am 28. Oktober 1978 der Mesopotamien Verein e.V. Augsburg.
Die bereits als Gastarbeiter in Augsburg wohnenden Assyrer und die aufgrund zunehmender Unterdrückung, Diskriminierung und Vertreibung durch die moslemischen Staaten zugezogenen Flüchtlings-Assyrer haben diesen Verein als eine Institution zur Interessenvertretung des assyrischen Volkes und als Selbsthilfeorganisation bei behördlichen und sprachlichen Problemen ins Leben gerufen. Daher hat es sich der Verein zur Aufgabe gemacht die assyrische Kultur, Tradition und Sprache zu pflegen und darüber hinaus die Integration seiner Mitglieder und Landsleute in die hiesige Gesellschaft zu fördern.“ (übernommen aus dem Internetauftritt des Mesopotamienvereins)
